A very nice summary of the situation. I've just spotted two very small errors: i) Green and Schwarz discovered anomaly cancellation, which led to the explosion of interest in superstrings, in late 1984. ii) Planck did not observe quanta. He assumed their existence, as theoretical constructs, in order to account for the Rayleigh-Jeans energy spectrum of a black-body; the assumption of quanta was the only way to avoid the ultra-violet catastrophe.
