Comments: Have just begun to look through some of the links. I love quantum mechanics and how it seems to relate to metaphysics. The metaphysics I like is mostly western mysticism, a la Gurdjieff, Ouspensky, Mouravieff, Maurice Nicoll, etc. I also adore hidden western sufis, like Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Voltaire, Brahms, WB Yeats. I believe that whatever reconciles quantum physics and relativity will be the foundation of the true religion for the next millenium, re-stating ancient truths in modern language. True religion has always partaken of the most advanced science of its day. Why should we be different? Love to you from / jw

I eagerly look forward to those who would continue the marvelous venture, and I pray for you in this endeavor. This is a lovely website and I shall return to it many times.

Comments: I was looking for a Jacques Cousteau page, because for sure the world is sorry for his departure. To me Captain Cousteau most admirable virtue was his complete dedication to share with everyone what he saw. It's not original to say this, but I will say it anyway: in Portuguese there is a word to translate a deep sentiment of loss; this word is "saudade". There is no accurate translation for this word in any other language. In English, I may say that we are going to miss him. Deeply, as deep is the ocean.

Comments: Love this page. It is so hard to find explanations to complex physics theories that are understandable. I will catch a glimpse of something I'm really interested in like Extended Supergravity in a book and then never be able to find another word on it. Pages like this are great for amateurs and the curious like me.

If I could talk to him, I would let him know that what he accomplished in his life benifited the world in ways that we are not even aware of yet. The world owes you unmeasurable gratitude for your determination and dedication of a lifetime of giving. We thank you, love you, and will never forget you. You will live on in our hearts forever.

Comments: Dear Dr. Gibbs, I currently direct the infertility unit at Northwestern in Chicago, but once upon a time majored in physics at Harvard. I love thinking about "the whole deal" and loved your theory of theories essay. I have always been impressed by how many people who, according to my own biases, are on the right track are from the UK You, John Barrow, and Roger Penrose are definitely sniffing around a major step forward in our understanding. My favorite version of this emerging world view is a diagram in one of Roger's books whereb mathematics is viewed as comprising a tiny subset of the "universe" of mind, physics is a subset of mathematics, and finally, mind (brain) is a small subset of physics. In each case the emerging phenomenon represents the most "complrex" subset of the world from which it originates. You and Barrow have both alluded to the view that maybe the whole deal is really just mathematical software, and there is no hardware per se. Your methaphor of a very complicated story is similar in thrust. My own bias is that Roger's diagram is close to the truth, but that the rigid dividing lines between the three "worlds are artifacts of our puny minds. Of course, everything is integrated with everything in the whole deal. In terms of why physics is the way it is, my versions simimilar to your theory of theories version with one extra twist: our observable physics is selected because it is the SIMPLEST physics to mathematicallky specify and still give life a reasonable chance to evolve in the observable universe. In other words, if we could quantify how much information is required to completely describe a set of physical laws in mathematical terms, combining the anthropic principle with simple probability notions would dictate that the one we observe is the simplest. We should therefore just "barely make it" into the universe before the stars go out, ala the discussion of Carter's Inequality in The Anthropic Principle by Barrow and Tipler. To make a long story short, our universe, along with its physics, is simply the simplest mathematical model consistent with the emergence of conscious life. Thanks for your beuatiful site. It would please me no end if you could share your reactions to the above with me. I once sent a brief message to Barrow at Sussex and he responded immediately. I have a feeling that you, Roger and John have some DNA segments in common since your minds work alike. Perhaps when the Human Genome Project moves along a bit we can check! Warm regards, Ralph Kazer, M.D.

Comments: From the time I first witnessed "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau, I knew it was my place to be a part of the undersea world. My main goal, at eleven, was to become a certified diver and live the dream of so many of us adventures. Jacques was my hero and someone that I wanted to be like in so many ways. He was, and is, a model for all to follow. No other person in the history of this world, could ever be as great a man and role model, than Jacques Yves-Cousteau. I was truly saddened of the news of the passing of such a legend. My life, as I'm sure all those who knew of his exploits, have been touched and changed by his presence in a world of uncaring, and harmful developement. He was truly a man of courage and greatness. I was saddened by his passing, but am assured that he is sitting next to the great Calypso and Alcyone in the oceans in heaven. Thank you, Jacques for everything you have done for earth and all those who youi touched. Man and beast, alike. All who will never meet you on earth will never know just how great of a man you were. You touched my life and all those around me. To his family, I offer my deepest sympathy at his loss, and hope all who enter innerspace do it with him in their hearts. There has never been anyone greater than he! THANK YOU, JACQUES FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE....I know you are swimming with the dolphins in the sky!!

Comments: I was looking for entropy and came upon your observations on causality. There is a niggling thing at the back of my head which says it ALL exists. This would allow jumping to an alternate universe by going back in time and mucking about. Our arrogant view of reality has often concerned me. I have always considered "events" both the mouth and the apex of cones, many causing one and one causing many... even in our own highly regarded uni-directional time flow. It was nice to hear you say it, indeed, to proceed from it. Worm holes do suggest that it is not necessary to travel as we do through space-time. but to cross it at an angle, arriving somewhen else. Renowned scientists have said this could bring in to question our concepts of causality. It's about time, eh? Fly free. Bob

I'm preparing a unit of instruction for Grade 10 gifted students in Melbourne on the topic of space and time as part of a postgraduate assignment in education. It's meant to be interdisciplinary, but our main focus is going to be on the myriads of interesting and perplexing philosophical questions which can be asked about time. We're goig to concentrate on time, but there is some spatial stuff which will come into it. I'm really excited about it, and I intend to recommend your site in the assignment as an educational resource. Feel free to contact me if you would like to hear more, or to compare notes!
